Origin of Carmen Power

The Origin of Carmen Power is an interactive story created by my daughter Carmen and her friend Toby Peach. It tells Carmen's experience with cancer through superheroes, monsters, and unicorns – all in her own words. Made for young people aged 7+, it's about facing difficult things with courage and imagination.

Design & Development — The project was originally planned as a theatre show called Impossible, but COVID closures meant rethinking it as a digital experience. My role was bringing together all the video and audio pieces into an interactive website that lets young viewers explore the story at their own pace. I also created the illustration of Carmen's room and toys that appear throughout the project – making it feel personal and lived-in.

Technical approach — Built as an interactive web experience that works smoothly across devices. The challenge was creating navigation that felt natural for children while handling multiple video and audio files efficiently. The result lets young viewers move through Carmen's story in a way that feels more like exploring than watching.

Results — A digital platform that successfully translated a theatre concept into an engaging interactive experience. The project gives young people a way to understand and talk about difficult experiences through storytelling and imagination.
